About ASWB Exams
The ASWB offers licensing exams for social workers at five levels: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. The exam is administered by the ASWB and delivered through Pearson VUE test centers as a computer-based multiple-choice test.
All ASWB exams feature 170 multiple-choice questions (150 scored + 20 unscored pretest questions) with 4 hours of time limit.
Exam Content Areas
While the exam content varies slightly by level, it generally covers the following domains:
- Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment
- Assessment and Intervention Planning
- Interventions with Clients/Client Systems
- Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics
Each of these areas is weighted differently depending on the specific exam category.
Registration and Cost
To take the ASWB exam, candidates must first receive approval from their state or provincial licensing board. Once approved, registration is completed through the ASWB website. The registration fee is $230 for the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Clinical exams, and $260 for the Advanced Generalist exam.
Scoring and Passing
The ASWB uses a scaled scoring system, meaning raw scores are adjusted for the difficulty level of the specific test form. In general, a passing score is approximately 90 to 107 correct answers out of the 150 scored questions.
Retake Policy
Candidates who do not pass the exam must wait 90 days before retaking it, although some jurisdictions may have longer required wait periods. Additionally, certain states may limit the number of times a candidate can retake the exam without completing further coursework or additional training.
